ESG refers to Environmental, Social and Governance, where "E" encompasses issues such as climate change, biodiversity, air quality, water and waste management; "S" relates to human rights, labour standards, education and healthcare; and "G" relates to board composition, executive remuneration, shareholder rights and business ethics.

For years, ESG factors have been perceived as ethically driven but immaterial from a financial standpoint. That concept is changing. Today, ESG has become a material issue across asset classes including listed equities, private equity, corporate and sovereign bonds, and real estate.
