By reducing vulnerabilities with respect to access to water in the semi-arid region, the Água Doce Program is considered a measure of adaptation to climate change.Studies indicate that climatic variability in the region may increase, accentuating the occurrence of extreme events (more severe droughts) with direct consequences on water availability.Thus, initiatives such as the Água Doce Program, which promote the sustainable use of water, contribute to coping with the effects of climate change.It is an effort by the government to internalize such concerns by disseminating good practices for sustainable water use.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (ODS)
With the implementation of the Água Doce Program, the Ministry of the Environment, together with partner institutions, contributes to the Sustainable Development Objectives (ODS).ODS sets the global priorities and aspirations for 2030 and seeks to mobilize global efforts around a common set of goals and targets.They represent an unprecedented opportunity to eliminate extreme poverty and put the world on a sustainable path.
Among the Sustainable Development Objectives, we highlight ODS No. 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, which addresses, among several issues, universal and equitable access to drinking water, access to sanitation, elimination of eviction increasing water recycling and reuse, implementing integrated water resources management, and protecting water-related ecosystems such as forests, rivers, aquifers and lakes.

BRAZILIAN SEMIÁRIDO
The Brazilian semi-arid region covers an area of 969,589.40 km² (11% of Brazilian territory), covering 9 states (AL, BA, CE, MG, PB, PE, PI, SE and RN), with 1,133 municipalities and 21 million inhabitants (12.3% of the country's population), of which 9 million live in rural areas.The scarcity of water in the region can be explained by the temporal and spatial variability of precipitation, high rates of evaporation and evapotranspiration, and by geological characteristics, where there is a predominance of crystalline rocks.These characteristics also explain the occurrence of brackish and saline waters in the region, which make it impossible to make these waters available for human consumption without adequate treatment.
To date, 3,145 communities have been diagnosed in 298 municipalities.Of the 1357 desalination systems, 700 works are already contracted, 482 works are already completed and 48 are in the implementation phase - in 170 municipalities in the Brazilian semiarid region.
