SUEZ TARGETS CHINA EFW AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE PROJECTS

The Asia branch of French company SUEZ is looking to expand its energy-from-waste business in China as the government steps up its clean energy efforts. The company will also focus on industrial wastewater treatment, river water improvement, sewage and sludge treatment and recycling, smart water projects and sponge cities as part of its long-term Greater China plan, SUEZ Asia Chief Executive Steve Clark told Inframation yesterday.

The French environment giant will also look at hazardous waste and waste recycling, as well as soil remediation, Clark said, adding that China aims to control greenhouse emissions, increase renewable energy production, and raise the proportion of non-fossil energy consumption to 15% of the total by 2020, and to 20% by 2030.

SUEZ Asia entered the Greater China region more than 40 years ago to work on projects that reduce pollution and emissions, restore water ecology and support both economic growth and the environment.“China is prone to floods, shortage of water resources and the deterioration of water environment,” Clark said. “It is on the Chinese government’s agenda to ensure sustainable use of water as well as the safety and efficiency of water for its people.”

SUEZ water supply projects include the use of a smart installation system by subsidiary Macao Water and a smart digital command hub to ensure water supply in five water plants and 13 water pumping stations in China's southwest Chongqing municipality.

The global pandemic, coupled with recent floods throughout Asia and around the world, has proven that the environment, biodiversity, climate, economy, health and quality of life are inextricably linked, Clark said. "We call for economic recovery plans that put environmental issues at the heart.”

SUEZ built the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park Hazardous Waste Facility, which produced more than 130 million kWh of renewable energy in 2019. It also developed the Hong Kong O PARK1 food waste treatment facility that recycles methane as a source of renewable energy, as well as the Taiwan Kaohsiung Renwu Waste-to-Energy Plant.

Apart from the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park Hazardous Waste Facility which generates steam for industrial clients through incineration, the Suzhou Industrial Park Sludge Facility in Suzhou city of east Jiangsu province reuses dried sludge as fuel in the co-generation plant while converting excess heat into steam to dry sludge.

China launched a Nationwide carbon trading system in 2017. It currently cover eight sectors: power generation, petrochemicals, chemicals, iron and steel, non-ferrous metals, building production and materials, pulp and paper, and aviation. “It is expected that it will eventually move into all key emitting sectors in the long run,” Clark said.
