"Israel is the best partner to guarantee access to drinking water in northeastern Brazil," says Israeli consul

ALADYR. Israel is a global example in water reuse projects: today, most of the country's agricultural production, for example, is based on reused water.

Itzhak "Tsahi" Reich, Consul for Economic Affairs of Israel Trade & Investment in São Paulo, commercial office that leads the project of technology transfer in desalination to Brazil, guarantees that his country can share the experience and know-how, as well as technologies to manage, reuse and treat water.

In an exclusive interview with the Latin American Water Desalination and Reuse Association, Aladyr, Itzhak "Tsahi" Reich delivers details of how Brazil can benefit in future partnership projects with Israel on this issue.

- Why does Brazil, and especially the Northeast, offer adequate conditions to receive water desalination technologies from Israel?

Some areas in Northeast Brazil have conditions and challenges very similar to those faced by Israel. When nature, on average, does not provide the necessary amount of rainfall or water from natural resources, then the solution for the treatment of water, whether through desalination or other techniques, becomes relevant and, in many cases, mandatory . Israel is the best partner to support the Northeast region in Brazil to meet this challenge, as we can share our experience and know-how as well as offer state-of-the-art technologies to manage, reuse and treat water.

- How can Israeli desalination technologies help in economic development and increase the quality of human life in the Brazilian Northeast?

Water is an essential element in our lives. Not only for drinking and growing vegetables, but also a crucial part in many industrial processes.

Treating water, whether through desalination or other techniques and responding to the need for high quality water for different uses, is directly linked to our quality of life and business opportunities.

- In which states of the Brazilian Northeast are the most advanced projects for the implementation of water desalination bases with Israeli technology?

We have great success stories of different water-related technologies in all northeastern states, including Bahia, Pernambuco, Ceará, and others.

- In the Northeast, there are already hundreds of brackish water desalination units, many of them with technology channeled by Embrapa. What can Israeli technology add to these existing desalination units?

Israeli solutions may in some cases increase efficiency and other values that can improve systems management and maintenance, higher proportions, less use of chemicals, etc., depending on case by case.

- Does Israel also plan to transfer sewage reuse technologies to Brazil? At what stage are these projects?

Many of the common sewage reuse technologies are "ready-to-use" products, requiring high investments in civil works. That said, for the remote, "off the grid" villages, small and medium, there are many innovative solutions that Israel can offer. In the end, the facilitation of such projects and at what pace is led by the Brazilian authorities.

- In Israel, how many % of agricultural production and domestic consumption is supplied with desalinated water?

The majority of agricultural production in Israel is based on reused water and not based on tap water (be it from natural resources or desalination). What happens is that the desalinated water is mixed. Thus, this mixture is composed of 75% desalinated water for human consumption and in agriculture is 50% (more or less). But it is not a precise number because of the mix of various sources that is made before reaching the final destination.

- Is there any other Israeli water treatment technology that Brazil can absorb? What technology is this?

There is a broad spectrum of Israeli technologies that can be absorbed in Brazil, from different types of water treatment and purification, water management, leak identification and control, drip irrigation, water quality management, water reuse solutions municipal and industrial waste and sludge etc.

The participation of Itzhak "Tsahi" Reich will be one of the highlights of the 3rd Seminar of the Latin American Water Desalination and Re-use Association (Aladyr), scheduled for May 22nd and 23rd in Salvador, Bahia.

The event, which will present solutions and projects for the reuse of water as a source of economic development and preservation of the environment in Brazil, will feature a lecture by Itzhak "Tsahi" Reich, currently Consul for Economic Affairs of Israel Trade & Investment in São Paulo.

Reich will talk about the potential of the Brazil-Israel partnership on issues such as water desalination and sewer reuse technologies.
