Bioworks buy-in boosts Hassan Allam sewage profile

Egyptian construction giant Hassan Allam Holding has made its first acquisition in Europe with the securing of a majority stake in German wastewater specialist Bioworks AG.

The acquisition will bolster Hassan Allam’s strength in water and wastewater, which have been earmarked as key avenues for growth at the Cairo-based company.

Hassan Allam has secured a number of major projects in Egypt, including the recently completed extension to the **al El Asfar WWTP, and earlier this year won a contract to supply a 40,000m3/d desalination plant serving New Mansoura City. Meanwhile, the infrastructure investment wing it launched in late 2017, Hassan Allam Utilities, has also shown interest in water, most recently through a tie-up with Saudi-backed developer Almar Water Solutions.

Munich-based Bioworks has references as a contractor in 25 countries, and is best known for its submerged moving fine-bubble aeration and clarification system, known by the company as the “Bioworks process”.
