I found this on another thread posted by @MarkyBoy49 which also has research/opportunities on India's water problems -
DFAT India Economic Strategy 2018
It's too long to read, but, out of interest, I've cherry-picked examples of where IMO FLC could have opportunities
(A search on 'water' in the doc came up with some results) -
India has around 18 per cent of the world’spopulation but only 4 per cent of the world’swater resources
Population growth, pollution and poor water distribution management are contributingto the depletion of available water reserves
Agriculture is largest consumer (80%),
water table dropping by 1m/yr,
over extraction by farmers will see some regions exhaust supplies in 10-15yrs.
This will constrain energy industry which uses 10% of water
Groundwater increasingly being contaminated
Water sector crowded & co-ordination challenging & India needs significant investment in WWTP & recycling
India lacks storage capacity to capture monsoon rains
Urban water supply-
No Indian city receives piped water 24 hours a day, seven days a week
47 per cent of households have individual water connections
Average duration of water supply in urban areas is one to six hours per day
Around 40 per cent of available water in India is unusable for any purposeSanitation-
No Indian city has a sewerage system covering its entire population
4,861 cities lack even partial sewerage networks
37 per cent of urban households are connected to open drainage;
18 per cent areunconnected and have no access to toilet facilities
Of these key urban infrastructure deficits, waterdeserves particular consideration-
• India is likely to face a water security crisisbefore 2030, when demand is projected tooutstrip supply
• around 50 per cent of urban water demandwill remain unfilled in 2030
• the water in nearly half of the country’sinterstate rivers has been assessed as unfit forany purpose due to pollution
• agricultural production already uses80 per cent of India’s water, is depletinggroundwater levels and will continue toincrease to feed the growing population– this will leave less water available forurban domestic use
• India therefore has a dire need for moreefficient water use and management.
