The anammox technology (Paques, Deamon, AnitaMox) dominate the industry for sidestream treatment being the most efficient biological process for Nitrogen removal, which doesn't require carbon supplementation (ethanol, methanol etc). To be honest, it would be difficult for the MABR system to compete. However it could be used as a 2 step system (or a bolt on) as it's advantage is lower energy costs for oxygen transfer, thus the system could be run pre-anammox for partial nitritation to produce the ratios enjoyed by anammox (1 mol NH4 & 1.32mol of NO2). MABR's low cost ammonium oxidisation with with the most efficient biological nitrogen removal process (anammox) would be a great combo.
The best option would be to cultivate Anammox on the MABR. Unfortunately with how the system is designed it would be difficult to suppress NOB's, which would ultimately outcompete the anammox.
