Online Sports Betting: Where Can You Do It, and What Sites Can You Use?

    byIsaiah SiroisSeptember 9, 2020

When the United States Supreme Court overturned the federal government’s restrictions on gambling in 2018, they opened the door for individual states to legalize sports betting. Since then, 13 states have acted to make online sports betting legal within their borders.

That said, not every state has done it, and not every sportsbook operates in each state. Navigating the web of different states, sportsbooks, and policies can get confusing, so I’m here to break things down for you.

    Which States Have Online Gambling?

Online sports betting is legal and available in these 11 states, and Virginia is set to join their ranks by the end of the year. Tennessee will also roll out online sports betting during the 2020 NFL season.

    Which States Have What Sportsbook?

But just because online sports betting is legal doesn’t mean that you can access every sportsbook within a given state. In some states, sportsbooks must contract with a local casino; in others, they work in conjunction with the state’s lottery.

ColoradoDespite opening just this May, Colorado already has an expansive sports betting market. You can access BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, FOX Bet, and BetRivers if you live there. Sportsbooks will often run promotions on Denver’s teams because of their market presence.

IllinoisIllinois legalized sports betting back in 2019, and despite regulations meant to keep out online-only vendors, DraftKings, BetRivers, and FanDuel have the casino capacity necessary to qualify. PointsBet and William Hill are both working on entering the market.

IndianaThe Hoosiers have a strong online sports betting market. DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, PointsBet, BetRivers, and BetAmerica are all available to Indiana bettors. Now if only they had a strong college football team, too…

IowaIf you live in the Hawkeye State, you can bet using BetRivers, DraftKings, PointsBet, William Hill, and,as of five days ago, FanDuel! New users must complete in-person registration before using the app until January 2021.

NevadaSince Nevada has such a well-developed gambling industry, it’s no surprise to see them on this list. That said, the list of sportsbooks may look a bit different here as a result. You can use BetMGM and William Hill here.

New HampshireThe state with the coolest motto decided to couple its online sports betting venture with the state lottery. As a result, you can only use DraftKings if you live here.

New JerseyLike Nevada, New Jersey already had an established gambling industry. You can access most major sportsbooks here: BetAmerica, BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, FOX Bet, PointsBet, SugarHouse, and William Hill.

OregonThe Oregon Lottery runs the show in the Beaver State. Download their “Scoreboard” app to place your wager!

PennsylvaniaPennsylvania hosts another thriving market. BetAmerica, BetRivers, DraftKings, FanDuel, and FOX Bet are all available here.

Rhode IslandOnline sports betting is permitted here, but it’s run by the state lottery. You will have to register in-person to use the state’s online betting site.

TennesseeTennessee recently chose to only legalize only online gambling, which is quite a non-traditional approach. While there are currently no offerings, you can expect quite a few sportsbooks to enter the market here in the next few months.

West VirginiaWest Virginia was one of the first states to legalize online sports betting. You can bet using BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, or William Hill here.

And there you have it. The sports betting environment is rapidly changing, so if your favorite sportsbook isn’t available in your home state quite yet, don’t lose hope! Online sports betting only been legal for just over two years, so expect lots of change as time goes on.
