....unintentially. There has been that much increasing seismic and volcanic activity up there recently I'm sure the place is going to blow and land in our laps..........

Jakarta: A strong earthquake rocked parts of Indonesia's North and West Sumatra provinces, an official said. There were no immediate reports of a tsunami.

The magnitude 6.1 quake that struck at 6.16pm (3.16pm UAE time) was centred under the Indian Ocean, about 90km northwest of Gunung Sitoli, the main town on Nias island, said Lukito, of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.

"It strongly jolted Gunung Sitoli, but so far, we have not yet received any report of damage or casualties," Lukito said.

The quake, whose epicentre was 33km below the Earth's surface, was also felt in North Sumatra's towns of Porsea and Sibolga as well as Padang, the capital of neighbouring West Sumatra province, added Lukito, who uses a single name.

Nias, about 1,000km northwest of Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, was hit by a magnitude 8.7 quake in March last year that killed about 900 people and damaged thousands of houses.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Last Monday, a 7.7 magnitude quake off Java's southern coast triggered a tsunami, killing at least 668 people.
