Yes of those two options I prefer buyback, but I am happy to concede that div would still be better than nothing, in the absence of any other major capital investments.
My point is that shorts have nowhere near the influence on the SP as you seem to think they do. Short interest in GME was at 140% I believe, at its peak, whereas there is 5% shorted in A2M. You just need to have some perspective.
As for institutional influence, it cuts both ways, and affects all major companies. Yet some people act like it is just 'their' stock that is affected, and only when the SP goes down. In my view institutions have information and algorithmic advantages. They will be quicker to enter and exit the right market positions, and exert some control over intra-day trading patterns to accommodate this. They can also spin narratives as much as they want. But longer term they don't define the quality and fundamentals of the underlying stock.
