I don't think it's either of those things. It could simply be the fact that the SP has risen like 40+ percent in a month or so. Even on very solid results there is bound to be some profit taking in the next few weeks.
A lot of short position are hedges in the sense that they are taken by large funds who are simultaneously in long positions as well. So the logic isn't necessarily black and white, betting one way vs betting the other. In some instances they will be betting on short term volatility (which is not uncommon for A2M around reporting) as well as betting on long term gains.
