Seventy percent of Danone's New Zealand milk powder is sold in China
New Zealand infant formula exports have quadrupled over the past decade and now exceed NZ $2 billion annually. With the Chinese market rebounding, New Zealand trade data shows that infant formula exports reached NZ $720 million in the first four months of 2025, which is expected to hit a record high. Among them, Danone New Zealand, which makes brands such as Aptamil, Karicare and Nutricia, is New Zealand's largest exporter of infant nutrition products, with annual exports of more than 1 billion New Zealand dollars. Recently, Steve Donnelly, head of Danone's New Zealand operations, said Danone is building a new production line at its Auckland plant, increasing capacity by about 20%.“There is also room for growth in our existing capacity. We are using this investment to prepare for the next three to four years.”About 90 per cent of Danone's New Zealand products are exported, of which 70 per cent are sold to China.
