Graphite, graphene and diamond are all pure carbon. The difference is how they are chemically bonded to each other. This changes their physical properties, like hardness in a diamond and it’s translucency or conductivity . Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms which forces the bonds to arrange themselves in a shape like a beehive, bonds are not used to form a 3 dimensional structure. This pattern of bonding makes it a superconductor and super strong. Apparently DPMG by pressurising the carbon in graphite whilst scything it off the wall of a cement mixer, so to speak, creates graphene which can cote other particles. This graphene cote enables great strength and conductivity. According to bluey this gives you the ability to create unique particles. He also suggests that other atoms like to stick to the graphene, which tends to suggest the graphene produced in this manner is not pure and has a few loose bonds around to bind other elements like N C and M, which is a positive because it holds the cathode together better. So yes graphite gets chucked into this propriety , off the shelf cement mixer , and comes out as a mix of graphite and graphene. By adjusting the gap between the scraper and the side wall and adjusting the pressure of the rollers pushing on the side wall and presumably the time in the mixer and the relative adding of different compounds one can manufacture unique particles. Now if you have a blob of graphene, even if it is not a single sheet, it can still conduct like graphene. Imagine a rolled carpet, it’s doesn’t look like a carpet but it still is and has all the properties of carpet if you chose to unroll it. The very fascinating point is that if you make even a relatively imperfect graphene by DPMG it should retain sufficient of the physical properties so imbued to unleash enormous uses across a massive spectrum of materials.
