IMO, I suspect a larger $ TSLA collaboration with cathode material, in addition to anode. There's something about those patents (single-crystal, DPMG) that required Dahn to supervise directly. Some link Musk didn't have (own) for his next gen stuff, either for EV and storage, or both.
