Not necessarily alumina. There are other ways of achieving this.
Novonix is researching (and as far as I see, with promising results) the idea of embedding Si85Fe15Ox alloy particles into graphite particles and then coating these SiFe0.20O0.39/graphite composite with carbon. (They are also evaluating different silicon-content alloys)

For the final results, we will need to wait, though. So let's not get too excited about this. Hopefully, if everything goes well, we will see some ANNs in 2022 regarding this technique.
