I am not surprised, the analogy is the improvement in technology.
Paper mail -->faxes --> email
Telephone --> VoIP -->video calls
Horse and cart--> ICE --> EV's
The improvements in EV's technology is bound to takeover sooner or later.
The difference in the toxic chemicals being mined for batteries is they only need to be mined once and then they can be reused, unlike oil which needs a continuous supply.
