Boiling it down to its most simple terms, NSW is running short of gas at a time when farmers and coal seam gas miners are brawling over development, consumers are complaining about rising energy bills and manufacturers are sweating on whether gas will be available to feed their plants in the future and at what cost.
In letting his views be known, Prime Minister Abbott is effectively saying that Queensland’s Newman government has achieved a better balance between the needs of farmers and gas drillers and that unless NSW premier Barry O’Farrell ensures the development of coal seam gas, he would be the one to wear the looming backlash.
“We have got to get the drill rigs going where the farmers want them going, where the geology is safe, where the water is safe, where the environment is safe, we have got to get them before Christmas if we can.’’
