A tiny Scottish village is bracing itself for a gold rush after £200million of the precious metal was discovered in its hills.
The popular tourist village of Tyndrum - near Loch Lomond - is believed to have more of the rare metal than previously thought.
Australian firm Scotgold Resources is now trying to establish Scotland’s first commercial gold mine around the popular village, the Daily Record reported.
The Cononish mine was excavated in the 1990s, but was never opened for business after Scotgold suffered financial issues, and the price of gold plummeted.
It is now trading at around £850 an ounce, so the firm are pressing ahead with an assessment on how to best mine the gold. A recent study of the mine suggested 248,000 ounces could be harvested – a 200 per cent rise on Scotgold’s estimate in 2012.
And there was more good news as samples taken from the mine indicated the gold was nine per cent purer than first thought.
Local residents are rubbing their hands in anticipation of Tyndrum becoming a modern day Klondike, when around 100,000 prospectors descended upon the Canadian region between 1896 and 1899.
The mine is expected create 52 full-time jobs in the area.

Fiona Robertson, a partner in the Green Welly Stop, said: “It’s good news if the mine is finally opened, but we have a history of people finding gold here.”
