There's a Thai journalist on Twitter who has a special interest in Vietnam called @ngahpham who posts insights occasionally. The following text is copied from two of his tweets today regarding the late Nguyen Phu Tong:
Nguyen Phu Trong was a staunch communist of a generation that has almost gone. He often quoted the fervent words of “How the steel was tempered” by Nikolai Ostrovsky. Despite in power all those years, he was still not that well known outside Vietnam and a few socialist countries.
Did he pursue his communist ideals? Yes he did. But his work was left unfinished and there won’t be anybody to take it over. The new leadership has different goals. I don’t expect any major disruption, for now, but in the long term, who knows…
