Apollo Hill has scale, large pit = large gear, large gear = cheaper mining, dirt's under 2:1 waste to ore ratio adding to the pits low cost profile, metallurgical qualities of the ore bodies are amenable to an easy gold extraction method (extremely OPEX light compared to CIL plant) called heap leaching.
