Across Australia, governments, businesses and communities are working together to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
The Central Queensland region is undergoing a major economic transformation that is creating new jobs, investment and growth opportunities for the future.
As the world moves towards net zero emissions, demand for high-purity alumina (HPA) is skyrocketing, driven by the need for advanced materials in high-tech applications.
HPA is essential in the lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and is a core component in semiconductors, AI chips and LED displays.
Amid the global shift, Queensland-based Australian company Alpha HPA is positioning itself as a key player.
As a bespoke chemical technology and advanced materials company, it leverages cutting-edge technology to sustainably produce 99.99 per cent pure aluminium oxides and other specialised chemicals.

Alpha HPA stands out not only for the quality of its products but also for its sustainable production methods. The company's proprietary technology eliminates the need for aluminium metal, a highly energy-intensive material, as a feedstock, reducing its carbon footprint by up to 70 per cent compared to traditional HPA producers.
It also runs on 100 per cent renewable energy and achieves near-zero waste through material recycling. This approach aligns with global efforts to decarbonise supply chains and develop sustainable manufacturing."Our products are key ingredients in technologies that help lower the world's carbon emissions," said Rob Williamson, Alpha HPA's Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer.Central to Alpha HPA's expansion is its new 10-hectare state-of-the-art refinery in Gladstone. Currently in the first phase of development, the facility is already producing smaller volumes of HPA.When fully operational in 2027, it will become the largest single HPA refinery in the world, with an annual output of 10,000 tonnes.

The project has attracted significant government support, including a $400 million debt facility and $65 million in grants from both the federal and Queensland governments.
Gladstone was chosen as the site for the refinery because of its long history as an industrial powerhouse, with one of the busiest multi-commodity ports in Australia and a community with ready-made engineering and technical skill sets.
As Australia moves toward net zero, Gladstone is uniquely placed to build on this industrial heritage by creating a secure and thriving economy for the future."We chose to be here in Gladstone because the region has a great industrial circular economy that is very supportive of industries like these. On top of that, you've got a fantastic workforce that is alive to these kinds of industries," said Mr Williamson. The Gladstone facility will play a crucial role not only in Alpha HPA's growth but also in supporting the regional economy. With more than 300 jobs created during construction and 120 permanent roles once fully operational, the refinery will bring new opportunities to the Central Queensland workforce.Alpha HPA already employs 87 people across Brisbane and Gladstone, with a focus on inclusive hiring and upskilling individuals.

"We're here for a long time, we expect it will be a generational facility, and we want to give people a go. So if you feel like you're in an industry that has a lifespan, and you want to be an early adopter of something new, we're open to everyone," said Mr Williamson."What we want is people with the right attitude and willing to learn. We want people who really care about the environment and care about contributing to a world-first and an Australian-first and an advanced manufacturing business."With its sustainable practices, advanced technology, and strategic location, Alpha HPA is a local leader in efforts to create a secure and thriving Gladstone economy for the future.
