That's because AMP was a mutual society (what the "M" stands for) so it was owned by the policy holders. Whereas Medibank Private is owned by the Govt. - and by implication all Australians - so really we should all be given an equal amount of shares in it, and then let it trade.
AMP was great. I got more from selling the shares than all my premiums had cost!
