The "Mediscare" issue was fully disclosed through the campaign. It was clear from numerous interviews Shorten gave that he was defining "privatisation" as moving the cost burden of the health system from the Medicare system to the individual rather than the selling off of Medicare. The Libs had plenty of counter material describing the ALP position as dishonest, and the ALP unfit to govern on that basis. Ultimately the public voted the way they did because they want the burden of health cost to remain as much as possible in the public system.
