The following is the text of a flyer handed to all who attended the meeting on Tuesday afternoon. There are a couple of obvious errors in the flyer but I have not corrected them. I have typed as per the flyer.
KCCG: KINGAROY CONCERNED CITIZENS GROUP.
Meeting with Minister Robertson 20 July 2010
1. The breaches of the Enviornmental Authority and the failure to report to DERM clearly indicate that the Cougar site at Kingaroy needs to be closed permanently forthwith.
2. The Scientific panel on UCG should be left to determine whether such a technology has any place in Queensland especially where there is potable water and/or prime farming land.
3. The permanent ban on the Cougar experiment is the only way the State Goverment is able to demonstrate to people of Queensland it has strong environmental credentials.
4. Affirmative action such as this will demonstrate to the rest of the UCG/CSG industry that the Government and people of this state will not tolerate this unacceptable attitude to the environment.
JUSTIFICATION FOR ACTION TO PERMANENTLY CLOSE EXPERIMENT:
. Experimental process - 3 pilot experiments approved - therefore an admission of risks with process
. No Public consultation whatsoever with Council or residents.
. Cursory desktop assessment of local impacts on water agriculture and community of Kingaroy
. No recognition of vital water resource down-stream in the area and the two businesses that supply water to 100s of customers in a 150km radius of the site.
. Serious breaches of the code of environmental compliance by Cougar energy during exploratory phase.
. No visit to site by EPA/DERM staff before project was approved.
. Well documented papers by CSIRO and other worldwide authorities clearly state this process should not be used where there is potable water. This has ignored by DERM in issuing a permit to trial.
. Minister Robertson, Minister Jones and Parliamentary secretary Choi gave constant written assurances to residents that there would be no infringements and the DERM would monitor the situation with great care - clearly not the case.
. Water testing practices that are clearly not acceptable and questionable accuracy.
. Clear breaches of the environmental authority issued to Cougar Energy by not reporting the malfunction and failure of the flare within 24 hours.
. Clear breaches of the environmnetal authority issued to Cougar Energy by not reporting water contamination.
. Negligence on the part of DERM by not making public dangers to water supply known immediately
. The Cougar site manager reported on Sunday 18th of July that Cougar could not guarantee the flame was extinguished as there were still gas traces being recorded. Are waves of pollution still moving through the aquifer?
. A failed 3 day burn has produced these toxins in our water. What will happen after months / years of burning 20 000tonnes of coal in this experiment?
Then on the reverse side on the flyer was a map of the Kingaroy area showing the tenement areas for Cougar Energy & also those of Red River/Black Gold.
At the very top of the page were the words FIND YOUR HOUSE!
At the bottom of the page was the following wording_
Why would any government approve these mining exploratory permits and mining developments licenses?
So there guys you have it in a nutshell. I'm happy to keep you in the loop.
Personally I am not happy with the location of the EPC tenement areas for Red River & Black Gold. If you were to check their website/s & look at the location of the tenement areas you will understand why. As I mentioned in my previous post EPC1181 & the two areas covered by EPC1921 have been granted where there would be in excess of 1,000 residential homes & businesses just in the town area alone. Not happy Jan!!!
