In today's AFR (Angela Macdonald - Smith) quoted that Sydney gas prices are now $29 a gigajoule, some 60% higher than peak of 2012. This is because of chilly weather and the 5th train at Gladstone coming on stream.
Interestingly, industry is paying 3 times for gas at spot prices compared to what Japan is paying for LNG.
The price squeeze has raised fears among gas buyers that they are one step away from being asked to cut back their consumption to preserve gas supplies for households.
Historically, wholesale gas prices were $3 to $4 a gigajoule.
