    Melbourne's train network faces potential meltdown on Wednesday with the drivers' union planning industrial action that will take more than half of Metro's train fleet out of operation due to safety fears.

    The possible action could  affect trains from first service on Wednesday and continue indefinitely, crippling the city's metropolitan rail network, which carries 232 million passengers a year.
