Melbourne carjackings: Public more scared 'than they should be', police commissioner says

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton has moved to reassure Victorians about crime rates, after a number of highly publicised home break-ins and carjackings in recent months.

"[The public are] more scared than they should be," Mr Ashton said.

"I can tell you that because we've never been more visible than we are now, we've never had police more visible right now.

"The community can be reassured that we are 100 per cent committed to that 24 hours a day in Victoria," Mr Ashton said.

The chief commissioner spoke out as the State Government announced it was looking for tenders for a $227-million project to equip police with smartphones and tablets.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the equipment would allow better sharing of information.

"There wouldn't be a crook out there that hasn't got an iPhone, and yet we've got our police relying on pens and paper," Mr Andrews said.

"That is not acceptable to me, and that's why we're doing something about it."

The Premier said the 8,500 devices would begin to be rolled out later this year.
