Hartnell is a very good horse and he run a really good Melbourne Cup.
If you watch the replay of the Cup the first 3 are all together around the 350m mark.
To understand the difference between good stayers and a middle distance horse watch how high Hartnell`s holds his head compared to the other two. Hartnell is probably the superior animal but gets left because he does a couple of things wrong.
