ozexplorer asks - [Who are the horses that like the long distance runs, on a wet and heavy track....]
Looking at weather forecasts - http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/forecasts/melbourne.shtml?ref=hdr
would a few spits of rain make for a "wet and heavy track"??
The official site says - http://www.melbournetrackreport.com/track-bias-report.html
Tue. 1 Nov. 2016 - Flemington Melbourne Cup Day
Rail: True
Penetrometer: 4.85 (4.84/4.89 8am 30/10)
Weather forecast: Overcast
Official Track Rating: Good 3
Our Track Rating: Good
Track Bias Report: rail remains in the True position at Flemington for Melbourne Cup Day. Early rating is Good, chance of a few showers but there's a long way to go before the track becomes rain affected. There was a noticeable preference to racing away from the inside rail on Saturday, particularly in the sprint races. Advantage to drawing an outside gate at the 1000 & 1200m starts, inside barriers are preferred at the other distances although should be of little importance in the Cup due to the distance involved. Hard to lead all the way at this track and expect most winners to be the ones finishing on late.
