Statistically, over a number of years, I think you are better off backing horses with greater odds. I normally look for roughies, which a few commentators have picked in their top three.
3 & 5 look best, Distinction & Franklins Garden (I think they are called).
Eye Popper & Railings look the best for a win to me, although Vinnie Roe was second last year (so I've put them in a Trifecta).
All said, I'm only a $5 a time better, and only on the cup. The Grand National in the UK was the one to watch. Cruel to the horses, but makes the Melbourne Cup look like a short run in the park!
