    Yes there is speculation that the moon was once very close to the Earth, even was close enough to cause huge (100's of metres high ) tidal changes.
    The problem is that a moon further away from the Earth actually has a higher potential energy than a moon in a lower orbit.
    These genius particular "geologists" do not explain how the moon got all this energy to keep lifting itself to higher and higher orbits.

    Gravity sucks. It does not blow!

    Some other geologists proposed that the Earth was much smaller (and denser) than it is now, and that over time some minerals changed from higher density forms to lower density minerals, causing the Earth to expand. My geology is bit rusty, but as I recall, they proposed this to account for a better fit of the ancient continent of Pangea on the surface of the Earth. Pangea was surrounded by a single ocean called Panthalassa.

    Ahh! the wonders of navel gazing.
