Some other geologists proposed that the Earth was much smaller (and denser) than it is now, and that over time some minerals changed from higher density forms to lower density minerals, causing the Earth to expand. My geology is bit rusty, but as I recall, they proposed this to account for a better fit of the ancient continent of Pangea on the surface of the Earth. Pangea was surrounded by a single ocean called Panthalassa.

Not sure why you'd be expecting geologists to be getting involved in celestial mechanics, but whatever.
The answer you're looking for is tidal flexing.
