i think a merger is highly possible....
1. major shareholders in both companies are closley tied.so voting would not be a problem.
2. fas have money gwr dont(gwr need it)
3.maybe the reason why drll results are not been fully released to shareholders to keep sp down.if sp was to rise to high merger would be made very hard.
4. gwr sp sell down..being kept at around 2.20 ( maybe a three to one offer).
5.both in same building.
only my thoughts could be completly wrong
