    On another note, I wonder what the NIH special committee trigger point is for pulling the plug on the trial if the efficacy rate is patently obvious and holding off on widespread deployment becomes a moral issue, or continuing the trial is futile?

    ie. what are the actual results for a trial termination? The required sample size response plotted against survival/mortality rate (compared to best standard care).

    I guess it's just an interesting detail because if there is a clear result without a delicate balance of cost/reward required for a marginal efficacy determination then we'll know in six weeks probably. I imagine if the first interim analysis is non-committal and a bit vague (further analysis required) then we'll know that things aren't in line with the original 12 patient outcomes, even though it still could be remarkable effective, but just needs harder numbers to allow better cost/benefit analysis.

    Anyway, I'm just on break and have to get back to space.
