We have a group of youngsters who have failed to respond to the last line of conventional therapy that might help them emerge from the ongoing horror of graft versus host disease. And so, still more suffering is in store for them, and there is no way out for them except maybe to submit to a new form of therapy that has not been approved for general clinical use by the regulating authorities, but for which there is theoretical and clinical evidence of efficacy in the suppression of various life threatening inflammatory processes. And so a group of youngsters afflicted with steroid-resistant GVHD enter into a clinical trial of this therapy. Time passes. Years pass, and some of the youngsters have now recovered from what is known to be an almost uniformly fatal complication of bone marrow transplantation. And yet you and a few others here dare to impugn that this therapy has not resulted in the saving of some young lives that would otherwise have been lost in the most dismal of circumstances? That this therapy likely has no value in clinical medicine? That it should not, at the very least, be prescribed by knowledgable clinicians on compassionate grounds? WTF are you on about? Ever read about how penicillin was demonstrated to be clinically efficacious waaay back in the 1940’s? If not, I suggest you do so; you could do with a compassion transplant.
