For the minority, sure.

For the vast majority of people, economic growth effectively means having a job, and having their moderate employee based superannuation fund performs a little better, and helps fund their eventual retirement, either free of a government pension, or drawing a part government pension.

Like you, they want to be free of a mortgage, and, who knows, maybe even plant a couple of trees as well.
