I'm not attempting to reply in Madmin's place, but am intrigued by your argument -

If profanities are not necessary (and I agree with you that they're not) surely "adults" (your description) do not need to resort to them "to get a point through".
Adult, for mine, evokes rational, reasonable and persuasive argument.
