It is reported that the growing demand for power has resulted in a 12% increase, YoY, in coal imports by generation companies in May as the scorching weather drove customers to crank up fans or air-conditioners.
The last 2 months saw electricity demand hit multi year highs in many states as temperatures soared. According to research firm OreTeam, people are expressing anger over frequent blackouts.
More than half of India’s power generation is coal fired and its share is growing despite a domestic shortage of the dry fuel.
Mr Prakash Duvvuri, OreTeam research head, said that "As a result imports continue to increase, jumping to 15.6 million tonne in May the biggest for the month in at least 3 years."
India’s coal imports stood at 13.9 million tonne in May 2013 and 15.2 million tonne this April.
