You can find gold with a $1000-$2000 metal detector like 2200d, it's a old detector, but people have done mods to them so they perform better like the more expensive models.

Personally I would not waste my time, all the goldfields have been run over with metal detectors many times, I don't think there is anything much left near the surface where metals detectors can reach. Most nuggets people find are tiny, under 1 gram, I don't see the point.
