Stop looking for conspiracies when its incredibly obvious what the problem is.

The company is looking towards the most difficult years of existence, Cairns is in either his late 50s or 60s and has likely close to a hundred million in assets. The prestige the company once had is being rapidly lost and there is massive uncertainty whether or not the company is going to ever go back to its glory days. He has gone from a cushy administration job in a stable in a company that was incredibly consistent and steady for a decade to being the CEO of a company embroiled in functional and media turmoil. There's a big difference between working towards growing a market darling in the exponential growth phrase that this company went through 7-8 years ago, and trying to steady a rapidly leaking ship. When you're as wealthy as Cairns likely is, simply ask yourself, why would he bother?

Cairns isn't some guy off Hotcopper with a few hundred thousand dollars in assets, he has at minimum tens of millions of dollars. He doesn't NEED the job. There's also at this point a complete lack of prestige in the job, and potentially he can even lose prestige by staying at a weakening company.
