I think you are missing the point here. The loss for the day would have been much greater if the portfolio didn’t have other consumer , utilities, old established names like visa, MasterCard etc.
This is what Hamish means by down side protection. Of course that also the reason when markets were induced by stimulus, his portfolio did not do as well as market indexes. This consumer and utilities are not going to give more than few % of growth when it is good and it is not going crash either like emerging markets, Brown & Babcock, Evergrade, etc.
