SPP are at the discretion of the issuing company, but so far, I think only QBE has scaled back their retail applicants. Most of the other companies have gladly taken the cash. I'm sure MQG wants to shore up their capital position too.
I think you are doing a sensible thing. If I had shares in MQG, I would be selling some to fund the SPP purchase too.
