I always knew that expression as: 'shoot for the moon, and if you miss you'll drift aimlessly through interstellar dust for hundreds of thousands of years, and if you're lucky may pass within 1-2 light years of a star after that but even if you did you'll be long past realising, and even if you weren't it would be a tiny point of light indistinguishable from the others and you'd have already gone mad from the isolation anyway'...
