Id like to provide a different opinion, if only for some diversity.
Gold is, as you say, a "safe haven" for when confidence in fiat decreases, however I would caution this:
Gold is intrinsically overpriced. Yes it is used in circuits and jewellery and is "precious" in the sense that it is rare than some other metals, but I would say that its actual value in the market is a very strange beast. We tend to think of gold as a more solid/substantial representation of value than fiat currency (i.e paper money), so we flock to it when fiat is weak... which is why you see inverse relationship between the USD and gold prices.
What I would say is this. Do you trust the value of gold, which fluctuates depending on fiat currency..... or the value or iron ore, which is driven by steel production? This is a very big question? I promise I am not asking it expecting an answer, so I am not asking a leading question.
I also have been tempted by gold, but I do worry about a gold BUBBLE. Look at the price!!!!? As soon as confidence is restored in USD and equity, gold will take a dive, the question is when? Alot I think depends on the US election. To also make this more objective and less biased and more topical I would say that iron is more vulnerable to Chinas foreign policy, but I also believe that China is very dependant on our exports, so there is that. Anyway, I am not expressing an opinion, only to highlight the volatility of commodities, and suggest that gold is really based on nothing real.
Iron at least is based on some form of production. However I do have to admit, both iron and gold are the envy of commodities at the moment, so I understand why people want to be in both. For full disclosure, I am someone who is tempted by both iron and gold prices at this time, but I see more value in iron in the longer term, especially magnetite, which is why I invested in MGT. Might I ask why we started discussing gold in the first place in here?
