The EDI is a special tax offset, similar to a franking credit, except that I don't think that it is refundable in cash. Instead it just offsets existing tax obligations of the shareholder.
It is a benefit the company can arrange for its shareholders, and the price paid by the company for creating the benefit is the forfeiture of an equivalent amount of tax losses it can carry forward.
