No doubt it was unconsidered to probably fly in the airspace above that part of the Ukraine, but the airspace was cleared for civilian air traffic and Malaysia airlines were not the only ones flying in that air corridor.

The Police have a safety principle when discharging firearms, that I believe is relevant and similarly applicable when being in control of a guided surface to air missile system.

That principle is "Keep your finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until you have positively identified your target and decided to fire".

The operator should not have fired that missile until the target was positively identified. They are trained to do so and easily have the means to do so.

Criminally negligent at the very least!

The media kept reporting that many flights took the same path but according to ZeroHedge (and their sources) that's an over simplification. Many flew over Ukraine but most of them flew south of the rebel held area. MH17 was the only one to fly right between Luhansk and Donetsk.

The local air traffic controllers would have known exactly how that happened but they have never been allowed to speak. Supposedly there was a Spanish air traffic controller by the name of Carlos who put out a lot of tweets just after the crash. I don't know if this has been debunked, but the following link has all the tweets including English translations.
