One thing you can say about China's State run Media - they don't need to invent or sensationalize stories in order to achieve the ratings to sell advertising.

Generally they are the "voice" of the government and are far more careful and circumspect at what they report than say, for example, our own illustrious State run media organization..the Australian Bulls@&t Corporation.

This raises all kinds of questions..

What made them decide to go to this area (outside the designated search areas) to listen for the pings?

Lucky guess? Possible, I guess.

What made them decide to publicize it as a dramatic news scoop ? Unusual.
