Obsolete technology or not, a 3D air-defense radar should be able to track the range, bearing and altitude of a comparatively slow, massive, target like a 777.
Only issues I see are whether it is an air search or targeting radar, whether the 777 was within range, and, of course, whether it was turned on at the time.
