Smoke can't overwhelm the pilots as their oxygen emergency source allows it to be either mixed with cabin air or pure oxygen. It's a different case for the passengers though who allows have mixed air. And the other problem with that scenario is that they would have sent an emergency signal one way or another and informed the tower of a detour.
