But in one of the most widely anticipated elections in U.S. history, eyes were squarely on a string of key battleground states, including Michigan, where, as of midnight, Trump led 54%-43% but about half the expected vote total counted and thousands of votes from Detroit yet to be tallied. And with Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson predicting turnout would likely top 5.26 million — the most in state history — it means the still-untallied votes could result in a huge swing, especially with the majority of the 3.26 million absentee votes cast in the state expected to be more favorable to Biden.
